Happy New Year!

New Year's resolutions are overrated. Most of us try to establish new habits or make important decisions when we hit a new year. And, while some stick with it, many of us see lags in carrying through on those decisions.

In my experience teaching, I've discovered that there often is an interest in classes in January and September, both because of the feeling of a "new year" or "new start." But I've seen that by the end of the class, only about 1/3 of the original registrants are continuing to participate fully. Why is that?

I think that we get excited about learning something new, or growing in some area of life. But then, everyday responsibilities get in the way, we get tired, or our initial enthusism gets tempered by the amount of hard work it actually takes to stick with something.

So, a resolution isn't the answer...a heart change is.

When we truly grasp how much God has done for us, we will want to live for Him.

When we realize that our bodies are a temple, taking care of them will become an act of worship and it will be easier to say "no" more often to unhealthy habits.

When we truly love someone, we want to spend time with them, sacrifice for them, and build our relationship with them.

When we want to grow, we will find daily ways to do so and let those decisions become habit. We find time for what we truly WANT to do.

So, how about you? Any resolutions this year? Are they based in your heart and desires? If not, they probably won't last long.

Here's wishing you a new year of healthy, worship-based desires that will result in the fruit of action and habit! Print This
